I just wanted to write a spooky but widely accessible track that relatively nails the atmosphere of Halloween...which I guess, to me, is "spooky but widely accessible". Lyrical imagery was my top priority, Burton-esque movements were #2, and fitting voices/effects were #3. I wasn't going to put in drums, but it also felt flat without 'em; thus the climax -- followed by a rapid denouement -- of the song.
lyrics
I am the thing
that lurks and sighs
down halls at night;
come find me.
Are you awake?
Or just like me?
Stuck in between?
Let’s relate.
I am the
creature feature
‘cross the parking lot;
you’ve seen me.
Do you still quake?
Let’s cut your teeth-
they’ll bite with ease;
come join me.
Focus
on freeing your bones
from the sticks
and
stones
Humans
love listening lone
to our haunting
tones
You are the thing
that lurks and creeps
down city streets
in twilight
Approach their doors,
cross creaking porches;
Introduce your terror.
From cornfields
and cemeteries
to the crooked streets,
we’ve come here
in droves and in fleets
for the tricks
or
treats
